A journey from the past in design education spanning 15 years in public and private institutions of higher learning, in subjects of Conceptual Design, New Media, Project Management, and software instruction. Other involvements include leading cohort graduation showcases, project supervision, field-trips, and industrial collaborations, on top of routine duties of course leading and syllabus writing. This journey came to an end by 2024 with a decision to return to the industry in full, exploring avenues that allow time and space to create and craft with my hands (without the paperworks of a confined classroom =)

As graphic design and digital media converged into a single major at most institutions, the opportunities to introduce a blend of digital assets on physical objects whenever tasked to lead visual-focused courses, comes with unexpected results from a vast possibility of 'digital vs. physical' experimentations. This aims to question design undergrads to what extend are we allowing our processes to be determined by the use of screens and its consequence to our methods of work, shall we remain gullible that there are no alternatives to present our craft

other than via electronic surfaces on devices, which in turn is constantly upgrading to imitate reality.

While designers observe their surroundings, whether nature or man-made to draw inspirations and thoughtful ideas, there is urgency to remind the aspiring ones that digital is a mere tool of convenience, and media a mere channel of representation, hardware and software alike. There are reasons as of why some traditional practices in design remained despite its inevitable digitalisation.

"Where else can you contribute your design skills and experiences, other than designing?", a question to that year's Multimedia Project Management cohort. 22 teams, 2 weeks, 22 micro-events. This team stood out most in my memory, as they brought what they love to the less privileged. DIY light-boxes, lots of flip-notepads, with loads of love. What if they too aspire to be an animator? What are their chances?

I didn't know Zam that well back then, other than an acquaintance from the industry. Yet when the students reached him for help to co-organise a mobile-photowalk, he said "Yes!" without hesitation and replied to my text, "Boleh je, takde hal la~". I am sure everyone who knew him remembers the smile he carry with him everywhere he goes. We miss you, Zam Nayan. May you rest and continue to inspire us.
